US GreenFiber, LLC was recognized at the grand reopening of the Metrolina Recycling Facility on July 1, which marked the expansion of recyclable items now being collected in Mecklenburg County.
GreenFiber, the United States’ leading manufacturer of natural fiber insulation, has a plant adjacent to the Metrolina Recycling Facility that recycles paper products from Mecklenburg County to manufacture GreenFiber’s insulation onsite, which is then used in homes and commercial buildings to aid in energy efficiency.
“We are incredibly proud to work with the Metrolina Recycling Facility to collect newspapers, phone books, cardboard and papers from residential, schools and commercial recycling programs in Mecklenburg County and neighboring counties and turn them into sustainable product,” said Harold Pinkston, marketing director for GreenFiber. “It is amazing when you think that a newspaper that is recycled at your house arrives at this facility, is shredded up and made into insulation that could be on the shelf of a building supply retailer within a week, and is making your home more energy efficient within days.”
All recyclable items from Mecklenburg County and neighboring counties eventually wind up at the Metrolina Recycling Facility, where they are sorted and prepared for market. The expanded list of recyclable materials includes plastic bottles and jugs, margarine and yogurt containers, buckets, milk and juice cartons and hair spray and deodorant cans. These items are in addition to those traditionally recycled: cardboard, soda cans, bottles and newspapers. More than 60,000 tons of materials were received, sorted and manufactured for market at the Facility in 2009.

Established in 2000 and headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., GreenFiber is the largest manufacturer of natural fiber insulation, fire and sound products and the only cellulose manufacturer to receive Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) certification for their natural fiber insulation product manufactured from 85 percent recycled content – 55 percent post-consumer and 30 percent pre-consumer, certificate number SCS-MC-02055. With manufacturing plants located throughout the United States that use local distribution models and require less transportation, GreenFiber products are sold to building supply retailers in the U.S. and Canada.
